Avoid Frozen Pipes
JAN 12, 2024
With frigid temperatures, many homes are at risk of their pipes freezing.
Here are few tips on how to avoid frozen pipes:
- For those living in an older home and having kitchen water lines run in the exterior wall, keep your sink base cabinet open so that the ambient air in your home can keep those areas warm.
- Keep the heat on in all areas of your house, even while you are not home and have someone check in on your home/business if you are travelling (many home insurance companies require this as well).
- Inspect for cold air drafts near pipes in unheated areas and seal any gaps with insulation or caulking.
- In homes and businesses with a risk of freezing, let faucets drip slightly, which keeps water moving and reduces the risk.
- Put rolled-up towels in front of drafty doors or space heaters near chillier areas to help keep the home warm.
If your pipe has already frozen, please follow the tips in the picture on how to safely thaw it.
Stay warm and safe!
